چکیده

[1] Rock physics attempts to relate the geophysical response of a rock to geologic properties of interest, such as porosity, lithology, and fluid content. The geophysical properties estimated by field-scale surveys, however, are impacted by additional factors, such as complex averaging of heterogeneity at the scale of the survey and artifacts introduced through data inversion, that are not addressed by traditional approaches to rock physics. We account for these field-scale factors by creating numerical analogs to geophysical surveys via Monte Carlo simulation. The analogs are used to develop field-scale rock physics relationships that are appropriate for transforming the geophysical properties estimated from a survey into geologic properties. We demonstrate the technique using a synthetic example where radar tomography is used to estimate water content. Citation: Moysey, S., K. Singha, and R. Absolute Permeability Calculation by Direct Numerical Simulation in Porous Media

Simulating fluid flow at micro level is an ongoing problem. Simplified macroscopic flow models like Darcy’s law is unable to estimate fluid dynamic properties of porous media. The digital sample reconstruction by high resolution X-ray computed tomography scanning and fluid-dynamics simulation, together with the increasing power of super-computers, allow to carry out pore-scale simulations throu...

A closer look at rock physics models and their assisted interpretation in seismic exploration

Subsurface rocks and their fluid content along with their architecture affect reflected seismic waves through variations in their travel time, reflection amplitude, and phase within the field of exploration seismology. The combined effects of these factors make subsurface interpretation by using reflection waves very difficult. Therefore, assistance from other subsurface disciplines is needed i...

Application of M3GM in a Petroleum Reservoir Simulation

Reservoir formations exhibit a wide range of heterogeneity from micro to macro scales. A simulation that involves all of these data is highly time consuming or almost impossible; hence, a new method is needed to meet the computational cost. Moreover, the deformations of the reservoir are important not only to protect the uppermost equipment but also to simulate fluid pattern and petroleum produ...

Simulation of sedimentary rock deformation: Lab-scale model calibration and parameterization

[1] Understanding the mechanical behavior of rock is critical for researchers and decision-makers in fields from petroleum recovery to hazardous waste disposal. Traditional continuum-based numerical models are hampered by inadequate constitutive relationships governing fracture initiation and growth. To overcome limits associated with continuum models we employed a discrete model based on the f...

Relating Geophysical and Hydrologic Properties Using Field-scale Rock Physics

Understanding how geophysical and hydrologic properties are related is a key problem in hydrogeophysical data fusion. Traditionally this link has been made by rock physics investigations that define how pore-scale variations in properties like mineralogy, fluid content, and grain geometry affect the geophysical response of a rock or sediment. As the scale of investigation increases from the lab...
